Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in Iconic Rivalry

The Australian skipper has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.

Australia's selection chief George Bailey has declared that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in the forthcoming historic rivalry.

There were concerns that Cummins might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.

Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches set to start on November 21 in Western Australia.

Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and felt positive about the prospects of being involved.

"We're aware that the clock is ticking and there are permutations at play, not just the back issue, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he will feature a key capacity. With luck from the opening match. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Injury History

He was sidelined the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss three Australian summers in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the series.

He mentioned that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.

Backup Options

In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from the national team for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."

"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the initial game as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the starting games in any case. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for a short period, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
