Wimbledon Introduces Video Review System in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with replay technology

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Replay systems will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Competitors are granted the ability to challenge certain rulings from the official, mirroring the practice already in place at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This step arrives only a year after the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which effectively ended the 147-year role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to review specific situations, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball made contact with an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Possible hindrance end of a point.

Notably, there is an unlimited number on the number of reviews a player can initiate.

Case in Point

A recent incident occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews are not exclusive to major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews in place at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have occasionally been unsure whether a ball was out or in.

Finally, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
